No chance or fat chance?

by kirky @ 2008-05-22 - 11:16:22

On the way home from work last night, I saw a young woman struggling to control her three small children.
The eldest was about three years old, there was a toddler in a pushchair and the young Mum was holding a baby in the crook of her arm.
She was obviously harassed but she didn’t seem like a bad person.
I was appalled however when, to stop the toddler from crying, she poured the contents of a can of ‘Coca-cola’ into a baby bottle and gave it to the bawling child.
It had the desired effect though as the child immediately stopped screaming.
Having said that, if this is her common solution, what chance does that child or any of her other children have?
Rotten teeth, fat bellies and poor health will not make them happy or popular.
Each generation seems to be less sensible than the one before.
As a nation, as a planet, we’re in trouble.

I've seen similar but with sprite. I hope they only do it when desparate!
LOL for some reason it reminds me of sex and the city, when Smaantha was baby sitting and after hours of baby screaming she put a new vibrator in with him... what ever works must be some people's mantra! Tho personally can't fault the vibrator thing as was straight out of the box!

If it was a 'desperate measure', then I suppose it's not terrible, but by the child's reaction, this was a 'normal measure'.
Saying that, my own Father is appalled at how much sugar my children eat.
As I said, I'm just as much a part of this sliding scale of ineptness.

na, sugar's just in more things nowadays! :>

Not calling you/your dad old or anything, but if you look at availability of sugary everythings now and 20 years ago there's a huge difference.

I heard somewhere that coke is rather bad for womens bones, but not mens for some reason. Anyway my daughter is only allowed coke on very rare occasions.

I spoke to someone who worked in a dental xray unit and they were constantly appalled by the state of some of the kids teeth due to their terrible diets and consumption of sweet drinks.

When I see situation like the one you describe I remember the saying "Just because you can breed, doesn't mean you should"

We're all culpable.

Ha, what we really need is a parent licence!

Oh don't start me off!

I have often be heard to rant that if you want to have a child you need to pass a writen test.

Mind you, I probably would have failed it.

lol, I wouldn't quite go so far as a licence, but a compulsery course wouldn't be a bad idea! But how to define good parenting?
There's always going to be the odd genus-from-crappo-parents situation so licencing is not a good overall plan.

Parenthood gets way too tangled up in religion.
Mine were pretty cool, mum's an athiest, dad's vaguely c of e. Left my religious choices up to me, tho my primary school was c of e, that too was great and didn't shovel religion down my throat!

I was brought up in a mixed race, non religious family.
Good morals though.

lol, my good behavior as a young child was commented on occasionally! One time I was in a bank with my mum and there was another child acting up, I gave him a Look and he stopped! Was a 'what on earth are you doing?!' look, I was about 4!

My dad was in the airforce (officer) so politeness was instilled from a very early age!
Morals came from my mum, who was/is kind of old-fashioned about some things!

I would be appalled too in that situation! My son has only ever had milk, juice and water. But we have put him off juice and my other half doesn't like the idea of it and it is still pretty bad so he only drinks water now! :)
